Owning a dog is a truly wonderful thing, it doesn’t just bring you lots of love, laughter and a loyal companion, but owning a dog also has a great number of health benefits too.
Dogs can successfully control your mood and cheer you up when you are down, you only have to look at those ‘puppy eyes’ and before you know it you are up off the sofa and heading towards the front door to take your dog out for a walk, even though you didn’t quite feel like going out.
Dog owners have been found to have lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure and lower heart rates than those without dogs. It has been said that owning, interacting with and stroking a dog actually decreases blood pressure and heart rate more successfully than drugs do. If you suffer with stress or tension, just stroking a dog can make you feel so much better and give you an instant lift. Dog owners also suffer with far less heart problems or cardiovascular issues such as heart disease, than non dog owners and in general, are much healthier.
Owning a dog gives you a good reason to get out of the house and go for a walk. Fido is always up for a walk rain or shine, and it’s not so lonely having a furry companion to walk with.
If you own a dog you may do different things that you wouldn’t normally do such as; running with your dog, throwing a ball for your dog, or taking your dog to the beach. These kinds of activities are excellent for keeping you fit and helping lower your stress levels. It is well known that spending time with your dog helps to relax you and makes you feel better.
Another benefit of owning a dog is the chance to meet other people and socialise. If you are walking with a dog this can provide an attraction to other people, especially dog lovers who may stop you to ask what breed you have, or even to compliment your dog. Walking with a dog increases the chance of meeting people and obtaining new friends, which engages your brain, teaches us new things and also helps to lower stress levels due to the positive feeling of gaining new friends.
People that own dogs often find that they are never lonely, as their canine friends are always there waiting for them when they return home. If you are feeling sad or down your dog is always there to sit next to you and make you feel better. Giving your dog a big cuddle can make you feel so much better if you are feeling down. As dogs never judge you or speak badly about you, they make for such neutral faithful friends who are always there to listen.
Dogs give you an unconditional love which makes you feel happy, and you can have lots of fun and laughter. They are always there to make you smile with their unique charms and traits. It doesn’t matter what has happened in your life, with your dog’s constant love and affection, things will feel a whole lot better. You will also have a better outlook on life as well as support when you need it, which helps greatly if you suffer from conditions such as depression or anxiety.
So as you can see there are many great health benefits of owing a dog, but do remember that dogs do come with responsibility too.
However I do feel strongly that the benefits of owning a dog largely outweigh the drawbacks and the fact that dog owners live longer than non dog owners is great proof.
